At 07:58 on Tuesday 4 March, apprentice Clara Whitlock found her employer, Arthur Penhallow (67), dead on the floor of his workshop at 7 Lantern Street. He had been struck once on the back of the head. A heavy brass-cornered mantel clock lay beside him.
Nothing of value appears to have been taken. The front door was on the latch. The rear door was bolted from the inside and its bolt is rusted solid.
Lantern Street is a cul-de-sac. A camera above Hollins Chemist at the mouth of the street covers the only way in or out, on foot or by car. The footage has been requested.
Four people had dealings with Mr Penhallow in the days before his death. Their statements are in this file. Your job: establish when he died, find out who came back to Lantern Street, work out why, and name the killer.
