Two weeks ago, a metal detectorist found a hoard of Viking silver at the Hollow Hills dig. It made the national news, and the landowner and the finder are due a reward worth hundreds of thousands.

On Tuesday night the dig's director, Dr Miriam Kettering, went back to trench 3 alone. She was found there at dawn, struck with a mattock.

She had sent coins from the hoard to a lab last week. The results came back on Tuesday. Start there.
